In Epal Gallery, 5th year architecture students at the Iceland Academy of the Arts are showing the results of a mapping of Kjartan Sveinsson’s work.

KJARTAN SVEINSSON: ICELANDIC BLOCK

The exhibition will feature the results of students’ mapping of the work of Kjartan Sveinsson (1926-2014). Emphasis has been placed on understanding Kjartan’s apartment buildings, and the exhibition will feature models and drawings of selected buildings in the capital area.

Between the 1960s and the 1990s, nearly 10,000 apartments in apartment buildings were built by Kjartan. This is such a significant contribution to the built environment in this country that it cannot be ignored. The works were highly controversial during Kjartan’s lifetime, but now it is time for a reassessment.
